FERAL SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND

Songwriting can be lonely when you stray from the typical themes of love, loss, nostalgia, and personal growth. Exploring less familiar territory, Kat Bula, Eileen Cuba, Nova Devonie and Cyd Smith will take individual turns round-robin style, performing songs each have written while drawing support and encouragement from one another. All fine singers and players of various other instruments, they share delight in the chord that shouldn’t work but does, the play and beauty of words that almost rhyme, and the emotional truth evoked by the magical fusion of words and music. There may even be some spontaneous collaboration on the spot!

Songwriters include:

NOVA DEVONIE

Piano accordionist with endearing Seattle bands for the past 35 years (!), Nova continues to explore the creative outlets of playing, composing and teaching music while maintaining joyousness whenever possible.

CYD SMITH

Cyd started her musical journey in her teens as a classical guitarist, majored in music at Stanford University, and then found her singing voice through the great jazz standards of the 20s/30s/40s. She produced her first album of original songs in the 1990s, collaborating with musicians such as Joe Pass and many Northwest luminaries. Her songs weave together her original influences with the various strands of American folk and pop music. With tenderness, wonder, wit, and well-crafted irony, her songs engage and surprise. She has toured and worked with artists as diverse as Laurie Lewis, Mary Flower, Rebecca Kilgore, and Russ Barenberg. Now based in Seattle, she performs regularly in concert settings, coffee houses, and bars.

"There’s no simple formula to Cyd Smith’s songs; refreshing, unpredictable.. they’re great songs that really work.” -Laurie Lewis

EILEEN CUBA

There’s rhythm guitar and then there’s rhythm guitar. Think of it as wood and strings becoming a pulsing, percussive dance floor. It’s not folk, it’s not punk, it’s not rock—it’s all of these backed up against each other so tightly you can’t find the edges. This is the music that lives in Eileen Cuba.

Her lyrics are raw, unvarnished, and unafraid to stare down the hard parts of being human—cutting close to the bone, naming the things we feel but rarely admit.

"Eileen Cuba has completely refreshing arrangements, deeply surprising lyrics and exhilarating guitar parts that create the fabulous breadth of her songs. She brings the avant-garde to her songwriting and sounds like no one else." - Kristina Olsen

KAT BULA

If you’ve only seen Kat Bula shredding on fiddle and vocal harmonies behind other artists, you may not realize she’s also a serious songwriter in her own right. With an irreverent respect for tradition, a poet’s aversion to non-load-bearing lyrics, a fearless imagination and an unapologetically older-millennial sensibility, Kat Bula brings a singular voice to contemporary bluegrass and Americana.

“Smart, sassy, sensitive… a rare depth and range in an otherwise endless sea of singer/songwriters.” — Cascadia Weekly

I’ll be one of several songwriters presenting new songs inspired by Kira Jane Buxton’s fabulous novel Hollow Kingdom. The author will be there, too!

You don’t have to have read the book to enjoy the event. But you might like the book. It takes place in Seattle and it’s pretty great.

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.

S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®.

Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn’t quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies—from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim’s loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis—fail to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.

Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.”
